So it seems that my 7 year old has decided she is completely against tattoos, piercings, punk rock, emo, and anything that I happen to like. She has decided, in all her 7 year old authority, to be the complete opposite of her parents. She announced that though her friends think that her parents “rock” she wants to be just like Miley Cyrus and grow up to be a Disney Star. Oh, the horror.
What to do what to do… Force her to listen to Dashboard Confessional in a darkened room, paint her nails black and get her a stars and skulls washable tattoo? Replace all her Jonas Brothers T-shirts and Old Navy jeans her well meaning grandmother keeps buying with skinny black jeans and Emily the Strange tees? Redo her Tinkerbell room in Candy Goth and Garbage Pail kids?
Or I guess I could just let her be herself and pray she outgrows the whole “I want to be just like a Pop Princess” stage… I hope…

I want my outside to match my inside… on another note, let us mourn the two year old fish named Philip who has recently succeeded on one of his many attempts at suicide. He will be missed…

I'd say let her become who she wants to be, she's only 7 chances are she'll grow out of it.

JoJo, have FAITH! My daughter was very much the same, and then one day she said: “Daddy, I want to get my ears pierced, I want them pierced at 10 gauge, and I want to go to INR:NRG…the shop. I'm not getting my ears gunned.” I was FLOORED. This coming from my little girl who said she would NEVER get any piercings or tattoos. However, we are also talking about one of the only children in San Diego welcome in quite a few shops, as she has demonstrated in-depth knowledge of protocol. Hee hee! All hail Zoe…12 going on 35.

My nephew tried to pierce his own ear with a safety pin in his bedroom when he was supposed to be cleaning it. He was 9. He's 10 now and has a full understanding that if he turns 18 and still wants his ears pierced to be like Aunty Sara, she'll do it for him, for a price.
Boy did I have to give him the good gorey details on why that was a bad idea.

Let a child grow how they want to.
It's not hurting anyone. She doesn't have to be alternative.
I have piercings and tattoos, but if i had a daughter that wanted to look “pop” normal, I'd let her as long as she realized that it matters who we are on the inside more than the outside.

I find it interesting to see children rebel against alternative lifestyles that their parents had subjected them to. It's the exact opposite of the way this sort of thing is generally portrayed in today's society.
I remember the friend in high school who had very religious and conservative parents as well as upbringing; but found and latched onto drugs and deviant activity quite heavily. I also remember another friend who's parents were hippies and quite liberal (not to mention very heavy pot smokers); yet he grew up despising drugs and resenting his parents for their recreational usage of marijuana throughout his life.
Every situation is different. When I was young, my rebellion was apparent pretty quickly. I wasn't drawn into an opposite extreme from my parents though; as there was no resentment involved. I was moreso just trying to find something new for myself. As long as healthy positivity is shown in your words and actions, I don't see any reason for your alternative appearance or lifestyle to be resented in the long run (I'm using the term “alternative” loosely, as it means different things to different people).
