Are you ready for something new? I hope so. We're starting a CoBM community site. Think Facebook, Myspace, or IAM. Before you start, please keep in mind that the software we're using just went 1.0 and is still a little rough around the edges. Also keep in mind that we'll be adding/changing things on a regular basis so everything won't be 100% all of the time. As of right now, some of the features include:

  • blogs
  • groups
  • pages
  • photo albums
  • file repository
  • friends list
  • and more

I envision groups for each state and pages within those groups talking about local shops, events, etc. Searching for people in your state, city, or with similar interests is easy. Polls, a classified section, and a custom CoBM theme are some treats on the way. And, well, you should go see for yourself.

Questions and comments are welcome but keep in mind two things: 1) This is new. 2) We won't be able to fix/control everything.

Last thing! Tiffany discovered that your username cannot be multiple words so stick with a one word username, or put an underscore between two words. Okay, go!

Will you be monitoring it for members only? As in, a person must become a member of the church first in order to participate in the forums on the new site? I am pretty sure IAM works that way. I know that on myspace and facebook anyone can join.

I just thought of a second question. How are we going to decide whom creates which groups, as in state groups so that there are not doubles or will admin create groups? As of now, the software looks like anyone can create though I've not attempted it yet lol.

I can't imagine someone not a member of the CoBM wanting to take an active part within the CoBM. As of right now, anyone can join. If this becomes a large problem then we currently have the ability close registration and screen all new accounts. And, of course, we can always IP ban if needed.

I'll note that you may make all or portions of your information public to all, public only to logged in users, or public only to friends.

As far as who starts what groups. Again, I think this will work itself out. If there is an active Florida group, it wouldn't make much sense for someone to start a new one. Even if they did, people will stick with the senior one. The same can be seen on IAM.

Have you seen examples of spam bots on our sites recently? Our spam filters catch a lot but sometimes things slip through.

Ok, had a chance to play with the new site. It looks great. It's a bit tough to navigate at first but if you're patient you're able to figure things out. Note on the pictures, they need to be gif's right now. It doesn't seem to take the jpegs even though it says it does. I hope we see more people move over there. I did manage to start the MN group so hopefully we'll see people start posting and maybe even have a physical coffee or something. Good work Chris!!

Do we use the same username and password as the forums? I tried doing that and it keeps telling me I don't exist so I tried registering then it says that my username and email already exist in the system =/

The community site is separate from the main uscobm.com site (which includes these forums) so you'll have to set up a new account. As far as it saying that your username already exists, send me a PM with the details and I'll check it out.

In just a moment I'm going to take down the community site; there are a few reasons why. To being with, it's hard to navigate and figure out. Several members have commented that it's not very intuitive. And, as we know, if it doesn't work easily, people aren't going to use it. Another reason is, there are better options. I don't want to tip our hand but we're going to try something that will, hopefully, integrate fluidly into the current website. What that means is that your username and password will be the same on the website, forums, and community site; there will be no need for separate registrations.

It will be a few weeks before the new community site is ready to go but we'll let you know when it is. Until then, lets keep the forums active. As always, discuss at will. :)

I thought I’d gone to the limits. I hadn’t. They gave me an experience beyond limits… pain and pleasure, indivisible.
