Mine gives me something to play with constantly, is a fun toy, and i intend to stretch it to 12mm eventually.

Mine was a constant reminder of modification, as i noticed it easily via touch. I also enjoyed it's centrality, in the middle of my head, and the symbolism of communication, another facet of myself i had modified.
Latterly it became part of the journey towards a tongue split, and the stretching gave me a sense of achievement.

I remember when I had my tongue pierced some 16 or 17 years ago I thought over and over to myself:
KNOWLEDGE SPEAKS, WISDOM LISTENS
I think it made me much more aware of my choice of words.

Everyone has something to say about the Mona Lisa until you're standing in front of it speechless.

I used tapers during some tongue stretching as i found taping irritated it and made it swell.
I trust they are steel rather than acrylic?
I also found in-between sizes to be the best bet, as the jewelry would just drop in when it's ready, but this can get expensive and hard to find suitable jewelry (i made mine from teflon).

The main advice i have is patience, although i found the tongue stretched quickly, it's worth waiting until it has settled very well. I found my tongue swelled each stretch with tapers, so best worth waiting until a time when this isn't going to effect you too much (ie not prior to work or wedding speeches!). A day or two later it settled down though.

I love mine because I have an oral fixation. It gives me something to move around that isn't food (because I have a very unhealthy relationship with it) and I find is aesthetically pleasing. I got mine done fairly close to the front of my mouth because I want to split my tongue and be able to get another centered piercing done behind the split. It also makes me conscious of my mouth and when and how I use it. It's a good reminder for mistakes I've made that I don't want to repeat.
