My wife and I went to an exhibit the other day, Mummies of the World. It's a touring exhibit and has been around for a few years now. It's hard to put into words what it's like to be face to face with someone that died hundreds or even thousands of years ago. So much of the detail is still present, especially in the teeth, fingers, toes, and hair. One mummy I found especially interesting was a woman who was naturally mummified and who had three tattoos.

Here is the description and a couple photos:

This young woman with long, black hair was naturally mummified in the warm desert air, seated in the burial position typical of Chile before 1400 A.D. She was wrapped in fabric after hear death, the impression of which is still visible on her chin and cheeks. She has unusual tattoos; an oval with a dot inside on both breasts and beneath the left corner of her mouth. Little is known about the meaning of these mysterious tattoos.

This is really cool, thank you for sharing. It is so intriguing to see things like this from so long ago!

These things have hardened in our soft pink bellies.

This is the sort of experience that can stick with me for weeks, if not months. Take the woman in the photos, for example. She died over 600 years ago. This was a living, breathing, talking, thinking person with family, friends, fears, and hopes. She laughed, cried, and experienced who knows what. 600 years after her death she's in a clear, humidity controlled box for people to view and ponder. So longer after her own death, she travels to parts of the world that she didn't know existed. And the icing on the cake is that she has tattoos, just like many of us. Of course, we know not what they represent. Regardless, it is yet another avenue to explore and think about.
