Hello,

We are two graduate students in the Sociology department at the University of Central Florida conducting research on interpretations of pain and injury. The results of this study will help to both improve the academic understanding of how pain and injury are interpreted in contemporary society, and develop public policy to improve how doctors and other medical professionals view and treat individuals that participate in activities with high injury rates.

We are contacting you because sports, BDSM, and body modification are some of the categories of voluntary pain and injury that we are showing in our study. Our aim is to have those that participate in these activities be the ones whose voices are heard in this study, so it is being sent out to people that participate in sports, BDSM, and body modification.

We are posting this here because we feel body modifiers have valuable insight into the social construction of pain and injury.

If you wish to participate in this research study, please click the link below. You will be asked to complete an online survey, which should take no more than 20 minutes. All responses are anonymous.

WARNING: This survey includes graphic images of injury which may be upsetting to some participants. If you are uncomfortable viewing graphic images of injuries, then please do not participate in this research study.

I've completed it.
Interesting study thanks. Please could you link us to results or finished paper when it's complete?

Why is it that they have to use the label "Normal" and "Deviant?" Oh well.

I'm sure the answers from this crew will be around the same, haha.

Though, what team is doing suspension like that???

"Normal" and "deviant", when used in Social Science, has to do with statistics and standard deviation. It doesn't mean deviant as in delinquent, it means deviating from the average. I didn't take the survey yet but hopefully that's the terminology they are using.

Sociologically deviance would also mean holding different norms and values to the mainstream culture in an area.
In the survey i think it's about your opinion of what is deviant or normal though.

Either way, my survey is quite biased….haha.

At least that I saw, they never set out a standard of definition.

Just added my own two cents. An interesting survey that I would like to see the results of.

Sometimes I wonder if I can say anything in less than a hundred words.
