I have started work on a tattoo on my chest, and it is more visable than any of my other pieces. I've noticed that when others with tattoos and other mods see it there is an instant connection – showing me their work, experiences and ideas for future work.  I've spent over an hour talking with a complete stranger & walked away with a new friend!  I think it is so great that people with mods reach out to each other in this way, it really does give me a sense of community in my little podunk town!  Has anyone else had similar experiences?

Yes definitely, visible mods can convey a sense of shared experience or beliefs, which can lead  some nice experiences! There is often an unspoken bond between people because of it, even if it is only expressed in a look or nod when someone passes.

I find i get treated differently in tattoo shop than m less modified wife. They're often friendlier to me and don't patronise. Of course you could say they should be friendly and not patronise ANYONE, but it's still nice!

Amber, I think that is very kind of you to devote your time to  share your modification experience.  Yes, there is a community and unspoken knowing which goes on with visibly modified people, and I think it is because in some ways we represent each other.  I know I am the only person many people have ever seen with large earlobes (because they tell me) and the way I interact with them sets the tone of their opinion of modified people in general.  So, thank you for being kind…. myself and my children appreciate that!  What is the piece on your chest you are doing?  I have a brand there which people trip out about!!  I only have one tattoo (which I love) and I want my next one to be grass… maybe around my wrist.  I also want my grandmas German Chocolate cake on my arm to go along with my current one.

Oakbear, I agree that there is a bond because of shared experiences.  And when you meet someone who is modified I think that you feel a comfort knowing that you aren't going to be judged.

Sommerset, my tattoo in progress is peony flowers done in the Japanese style. It's gonna be a big piece when it's done! I'll post pics when it is complete!  I love your tattoo ideas! Mods often tell the story of who we are. It is great to learn the meanings behind them!

I feel like those of us with visible mods have an opportunity to change other peoples perceptions of what someone with mods is like. Some feel that people with lots of tattoos are criminals. I have never even had a speeding ticket! LOL People who are modified are like everyone else: good and bad alike.
